Earlier that evening police reported another incident in the same area, the 13900 block of Brookhurst Street. Officers were called at 8:18 p.m. after a 50-year-old woman was robbed and assaulted while she was walking to the ATM, police said in a statement Monday, Aug. 7.

The call was a reported as a man with a gun, but no weapon was retrieved, said Lt. Chris Lawton. The victim said she was walking to the machine with her money in hand before the attack.

Officers found the suspect, a 46-year-old local transient, leaving the scene. He was positively identified as the suspect, and victim’s stolen money was recovered.

The woman, a Garden Grove resident, was taken to a hospital and treated for her injuries which are not considered life-threatening. The suspect was in custody.

Lawton said the two events are not related.

“It’s kind of a coincidence that these happened within hours of each other,” he said.
