Spring Blooms! But…protect blooming plants from hard freeze tonight – The Birmingham News – al.com

SPRINGVILLE, Alabama — Spring finally arrived last week and flowers and trees are blooming throughout the state. Several areas need to take precautions and protect their plants from a freeze early Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for much of Alabama so it’s time to cover plants and flowers that may be damaged by freezing temperatures.

Here are a couple of links on how to cover plants to protect them from sub-freezing temperatures.

Briefly, you can use plastic or fabric. Plastic is much lighter but needed to be taken off of the plant before the sun shines on it directly. The plastic holds heat and you can damage the plant if it gets too hot under a plastic cover.

Cover the plant to the ground if possible and remove in the morning.
