Bronx Residents Kick Off Gardening Season at ‘Grow Together’ Event – NY1

Bronx residents with green thumbs and those who want them kicked off gardening season Saturday.

The 30th annual Grow Together event brought families, community gardeners and experts together for lessons in gardening and composting.

Those who attended the event enjoyed food, music, dancing and prizes.

Organizers said that the event is meant to be fun and informative.

“This conference marks the beginning of the growing season here in New York City,” said Larry Scott Blackmon, deputy commissioner of the Department of Parks and Recreation. “GreenThumb is the city’s community gardening program, and it’s actually the nation’s largest community gardening program. So there’s an excitement in the air. We’re ready for spring. We have over 1,000 people here ready to garden.”

“I know that right after this conference, I’m going to be able to plant and produce all the vegetables I need for the summer,” said one person who attended the event.

The GreenThumb program works with community members to organize neighborhood revitalization projects and improve school science programs.
